Why Your Backpack Matters on an Expedition

One common failure is burst seams where a pack has been manufactured with a single stitch design, or the standard of the stitching is poor with little 'quality control' evident at manufacturing. Another is access or 'entry' issues caused by overloaded packs straining zipper mechanisms, or foreign bodies such as sand and grit clogging movements. I've seen shoulder straps literally degrade and disintegrate under the pressure of constant load. Buckles and clips often fail due to the ingress of dirt, or because the material became brittle when exposed to extremes of temperatures. I've seen the actual fabric of packs wear through, tear, and even just burst.
