Preparing for Autumn Hiking
As the lush greens of summer give way to the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of autumn, the allure of the outdoors becomes even more irresistible. Autumn hiking offers a unique and rewarding experience, with cooler temperatures, stunning landscapes, and often fewer crowds. However, the change in season also brings different challenges that require preparation.
Autumn is arguably the most visually stunning season for hiking. The changing foliage creates a vibrant tapestry of colors, transforming familiar trails into entirely new experiences. The season’s unique beauty also provides perfect conditions for photography, with soft lighting and colorful landscapes - perfect for filling social media feeds. The cooler temperatures of autumn make hiking more comfortable and reduce the risk of overheating. The brisk air is refreshing, energising, and usually adds to the overall enjoyment of being outdoors. Rainfall usually increases, but again that can be a positive, adding a whole new and exciting dimension to outdoor environments, with rivers swelling and waterfalls coursing faster and heavier.
Autumn also brings the season of abundance in terms of foraging for wild edibles that many Karrimor SF users enjoy, from fruits and berries to mushrooms.
As summer ends and children return to school, tracks, trails and public rights of way tend to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful and solitary hiking experience. This makes autumn an ideal time to explore popular hiking spots without the hustle and bustle of peak season.

Autumn weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures fluctuating throughout the day from 'quite warm' to 'definitely chilly', as well as the ever-present threat of rain (if it isn't raining already!). Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing conditions. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add an insulating layer like a fleece or down jacket to retain body heat. Finish with a waterproof and windproof outer shell to protect against rain and wind. Our brand ambassador Justin Miles also packs a hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter so that if the temperature does take a significant downb-turn, the extras can help keep him warm.
Hiking conditions can be tricky in autumn, with wet leaves, mud, and even early snow making paths slippery. Investing in sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good traction will help you to navigate slippery trails and keep your feet dry. Good quality walking socks are also an essential element of looking after your feet as they provide warmth and wick moisture away from your skin.
When preparing for an autumn hike, your choice of backpack is crucial. The right backpack or daypack can make a significant difference in your comfort and safety, especially as the weather becomes more unpredictable.
The size of your backpack should match the duration and nature of your hike. For day hikes, a daypack with a capacity of 25-40 liters is usually sufficient, with larger packs being used for multi-day hikes. Whichever pack you choose, it should have enough space to carry essential items like extra clothing layers, water, snacks, and emergency gear.
A comfortable backpack is essential for long days hiking, no matter where you are in the world. If your daypack or backpack doesn’t fit well, it can cause discomfort and fatigue, at worst causing injury and at best detracting from the enjoyment of your hike. Choose a pack with adjustable shoulder straps, a padded back panel, a hip belt, and a sternum strap. One important factor that many people overlook regarding fit, is that just like clothing, one size may not fit or suit everyone, no matter how adjustable the shoulder straps are.
Autumn weather can change rapidly, and you may encounter rain, wind, or even early snow. A weather-resistant backpack will help keep your gear dry and protected, so look for a pack built from water-resistant materials. Karrimor SF packs are constructed using durable water repellent material, but for added weather protection we recommend our Karrimor SF rain covers (available in sizes to fit all of our packs). We also supply Karrimor SF dry bags in various sizes to give even more weather-protection for your valuable outdoor equipment.

"During summer months, when I'm expecting no rain I rely on the water-repellent fabric of my packs to give 'just in case' protection. If I'm expecting rainfall then I usually stuff a Karrimor SF rain cover into the top flap of my pack ready to be deployed if and when the weather turns. But if I know that I'm going to be challenged with heavy rain or snow, I always use Karrimor SF dry bags so that I've got full protection for my gear" says Justin Miles
Staying hydrated is crucial, even in cooler weather. Having easy access to water can make a big difference, especially on longer hikes. Karrimor SF backpacks and daypacks have an internal pouch designed to hold a hydration bladder, and some of our packs have a port for the drinking hose which allows you to drink without having to stop and unpack your water bottle.
No matter what season, always make sure that you're carrying adequate safety equipment in your backpack or daypack when you're hiking so that you'\re prepared should the worst happen.
Autumn hiking offers a unique blend of beauty, tranquility, and challenge and for many is one of the most spectacular times of the year to enjoy outdoor spaces. With the right preparation you can enjoy the crisp air, stunning foliage, and peaceful trails that define this season. Whether you’re venturing into familiar territory or exploring new paths, autumn hiking is a great way to connect with nature and experience the season’s splendour.
