Backpacking Holidays: Explore the World on a Budget
Backpacking holidays offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the world whilst immersing yourself in local culture, learning a new language, enjoying different culinary experiences, and forging connections with fellow travelers. Embarking on a backpacking trip will create unforgettable adventures and memories that will last a lifetime. The world is your oyster when it comes to backpacking holidays, with countless destinations waiting to be explored. From the majestic mountains of the Himalayas, the pristine beaches of Southeast Asia, Antipodean adventures in Australia, the variety of the United States, and the vibrant cities of Europe, the options are endless. When you're choosing a backpacking destination, consider factors such as your budget, your interests, language barriers, cultural differences, and travel preferences. Choosing the right pack for backpacking holidays is vitally important because you'll be carrying everything that you need for weeks, months, or even years on your back, and Karrimor SF have plenty of suitable packs to choose from. Your pack will become your house, so start by selecting a robust and rugged backpack that will withstand the rigours of continuous travel, weather, and boisterous baggage handlers; Karrimor SF manufactures for military contracts world-wide, so our packs are proven to be as tough as you can get. Make sure that your backpack fits comfortably: all of our packs provide a good level of adjustability, but some of the larger packs in the Karrimor SF ranges, such as the Karrimor SF Predator 80-130 Expedition Pack or Odin 75 use the Karrimor SF 'SA Back System', which enables you to adjust your pack to fit your back. Make sure that your pack has ample storage space for your travelling essentials, and compartments make storing and retrieving equipment easier. Some of our packs, like the Predator 80-130 Expedition Backpack have webbing for MOLLE and/or are PLCE compatible, so you can secure a range of pockets and pouches to the outside of your pack. If you add Karrimor SF PLCE Sabre Side Pockets to your backpack (assuming it's a PLCE compatible pack!) then you could also pack a Karrimor SF PLCE Yoke, which gives you the ability to turn your PLCE Sabre Side Pockets into a 25 litre capacity daypack; great if you want to leave your main pack at your 'basecamp' whilst you head off to explore for a day! |
When you're thinking about what to take on your backpacking trip or tour, consider using equipment with maximum versatility. Equipment that has multiple uses saves weight and space in your backpack, which is important if you're going to be carrying it for long periods. It's surprising how quickly even the largest expedition backpack can fill once you've laid out essentials such as clothing, first-aid kit, toiletries, towel, communications and photography equipment and chargers, sleeping system, cooking kit, and necessary documents such as passports and visas. Budgeting can be key to making the most of your backpacking holiday without breaking the bank. Working within a defined budget can help you to experience more, or stay away from home for longer. Start by creating a realistic budget that includes expenses such as accommodation, transportation, food, and activities. You can keep costs down by researching affordable accommodation options in advance, such as hostels, guesthouses, or camping sites. Consider cooking your own meals from fresh local ingredients or dried expedition food, or eating (safe) street food to save money on dining expenses. Take advantage of public transport, walking, or hitchhiking (safety warnings apply) to get around, and look for free or low-cost activities and attractions to explore your destination without spending a fortune. There are plenty of printed travel guides available in bookshops, and a quick internet search of 'backpacking' and your chosen destination should throw up an abundance of informative sites and blogs. |
More often than not, you'll meet other backpackers as you travel which gives you the opportunity to share experiences and top tips on everything from places to stay, places to eat, and things to avoid.
Staying safe and healthy is paramount when on backpacking holidays especially when traveling to unfamiliar destinations, and a lot of safety comes down to planning. Always, always, make time to plan ahead. Make sure that you're aware of any regional illness issues and vaccinate accordingly if possible. Take precautions to protect yourself from common travel health risks such as avoiding water-borne illnesses by drinking water from properly sealed water bottles and/or by using proper travel filtration systems (there are plenty available), being aware of and take precautions when it comes to insect and animal bites, and choosing wisely when it comes to food.
Protect yourself from theft and scams. Keep your belongings secure at all times, avoid carrying large sums of cash in one place, and be careful with the visibility of valuable items such as jewelry or expensive watches. Be extra-vigilant in crowded or touristy areas which can be hotspots for thieves and scammers. An abundance of information can be found through websites and blogs about local trends which could help, such as only using taxis from a particular area outside of the airport and which scams are currently in operation. Karrimor SF backpacks have various internal pockets and pouches which could be used to conceal and store valuables.

One 'top tip' from our brand ambassador Justin Miles is to always have a plan: "Planning is essential for success. Planning will help you to experience and achieve as much as possible within the time and budget available, but also plan for what to do if it all goes wrong." Above all, backpacking holidays are about embracing the adventure and immersing yourself in the experience. Be open-minded, flexible, and willing to step outside your comfort zone as you navigate new cultures, landscapes, and experiences. The challenges and uncertainties of travel can stretch your capabilities to the max, but embrace them with a positive attitude, adapt and learn as you go, and remember that some of the best memories are created when things don't go according to plan. Cherish the friendships you make along the way, and savor every moment of your backpacking holiday as you embark on the journey of a lifetime. Staff in the network of Karrimor SF retailers around the globe can help you to choose the right pack for your backpacking adventure, but if you need our help choosing a Karrimor SF backpack then drop us a line through the contact page and we'll be here to help you. www.justforthechallenge.com |
